Cleaning with kids in the house: 8 safety rules

Cleaning a home with young children requires different products, different timing, and different ventilation. Eight specific rules that prevent the most common accidents.

TL;DR

Cleaning around young children requires eight specific habits — locked supplies, fragrance-free products, 30-minute dry times, ventilation, no aerosols, no mixing chemicals, dedicated kid-zone cleaning, and never leaving solutions unattended on the floor. Three of these account for most pediatric ER visits related to household cleaners.

Pediatric ER admissions related to cleaning products in Canada total roughly 6,200 per year. The pattern is consistent and preventable.

The eight safety rules

  1. Lock supplies — every cleaning product in a locking cabinet above 1.2 metres or with a child-proof latch.
  2. Fragrance-free products — children under 5 have far more sensitive airways than adults.
  3. 30-minute dry times — keep children out of the cleaned area until surfaces are visibly dry.
  4. Ventilate aggressively — open windows or run the bathroom fan during and after cleaning.
  5. No aerosols — even the eco ones produce respirable droplets.
  6. Never mix products — bleach plus ammonia (common in glass cleaner) makes chloramine gas. This is the #1 cause of household chemical exposures.
  7. Kid-zone-dedicated cleaning — toys, play surfaces, and high-chairs need food-safe cleaners (vinegar-water or soap-water) not disinfectants unless visibly soiled.
  8. Never leave a solution unattended on the floor — young children investigate.

The three that prevent most ER visits

  • Locking supplies — accounts for ~70% of pediatric exposures (ingestion of accessible bottles)
  • Don't mix products — chloramine gas exposure from accidental DIY mixing
  • Avoid aerosols around children — inhalation injuries from spray drift

Practical scheduling

Schedule cleaning during nap time or when children are at school. Avoid late-day cleaning that leaves wet surfaces overnight in a child-accessible area; supervised dry time is safer than 'it'll dry by morning'.

Frequently asked

More on this topic

Are eco-products fine to leave accessible to kids?
Still no. 'Eco' doesn't mean 'edible'. Plant-based surfactants can still cause GI upset and mucous-membrane irritation if a toddler drinks them.
What's the right call if my kid ingests a cleaning product?
Call Poison & Drug Information Service (PADIS) at 1-800-332-1414 immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed.
Do you adjust your cleaning protocol for households with young kids?
Yes. Fragrance-free across the board, all supplies locked in our caddy, and we time the visit to nap or school hours when possible.
Are disinfectant wipes safe for kid surfaces?
Most contain quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), which leave residue. We use a damp cloth with food-grade soap or vinegar-water on toys and high-chairs.
